American optimism, founded on the quest for liberty, has endured for centuries. It has always been with great optimism that people from around the world have flocked to these shores, hoping to find what they could not in their former homelands. It is with enduring optimism that they devote themselves to the work freedom requires, adding to their prosperity and security. It is with this same optimism that we pass along to each new generation the distinctly American ideal that each of us is born into a life of liberty that we are each responsible for preserving. The essence of freedom is to respect the rights and to meet the responsibilities on which our liberty rests and our Republic depends. Maintaining it requires the combined effort of every American.
